Definition: A preposition is word which is used before a noun, pronoun or noun phrase to express its relationship with some other word in the sentence.
Preposition হল এমন শব্দ যা কোন noun, pronoun বা noun phrase-এর আগে বসে তার সাথে বাক্যস্থিত অন্য শব্দের সম্পর্কর্ প্রকাশ করে।

2. Double Preposition
3. Compound Preposition
4. Phrase Preposition
5. Participle Preposition
6. Disguised Preposition
1. Simple Preposition: এই ধরণের preposition গুলো মুলত একটি শব্দ।
Example: At, by, with, of, off, from, through, after etc.
2. Double Preposition: এই ধরনের preposition গুলো দুটি ভিন্ন preposition এর সমষ্টি, কিন্তু তারা একটি preposition এর কাজ করে।(preposition+preposition=double preposition)
Example:
The machine is out of order.
The cow lives upon grass.
We lowered the boat into the sea.
3. Compound Preposition: কোন noun, adjective বা adverb আগে কোন simple preposition যুক্ত হয়ে যে preposition গঠিত হয় তাকে Compound Preposition বলে।
Example:
by+hind=behind, by+side=beside, by+fore=before, by+tween=between
By+yond=beyond, on+long=along, on+by+out=about.
লক্ষ্য করুণ, Y, compound preposition গঠিত হওয়া সময় by preposition টি be-তে এবং on preposition টি a-তে রুপান্তরিত হয়েছে।
4. Phrase Preposition: দুই বা ততোধিক word একত্রে যখন একটি মাত্র parts of speech এর কাজ করে তখন তাকে বলে phrase. আর একটি phrase যখন একটি preposition এর কাজ তখন তাকে Phrase Preposition বলে।
Example:
There is a pond in front of my house.
I could not pass the exam in spite of my hard work.
We worked at home instead of going to school.
I could not go to school because of my illness.
As for myself, I know nothing about it.
5. Participle Preposition: কতগুলো present participle (verb+ing) এবং past participle (verb এর past participle) preposition এর মত ব্যবহৃত হয়ে থাকে। Participle Preposition বলে।
Example:
Reading this matter I know nothing.
The Karatoa flows past our village.
6. Disguised Preposition: কখনও কখনও preposition টির পরিবর্তে ‘o’ এবং of preposition এর পরিবর্তে ‘ড়’ ব্যবহৃত হয়। এরুপে ব্যবহৃত হলে এদেরকে Disguised Preposition বলে।
Example:
The poor man went a (on) begging.
The hunter decided to go a (on) hunting.
Now it is 10 O’ (of) clock in the morning.
Preposition এর ব্যবহার
a. Dimension বা মাত্রা বুঝাতে:
উপরে=on/upon, নীচে=under, নিকটে=near, পাশে=by/beside মধ্যে=in, বাহিরে=out.
b. Mode of action বা কাজের ধরন বুঝাতে: Mode দুই ধরনের।
